What is Gut Health

What is gut health and why does it feel like click bait?

Why is it always 7?

Anyways…

The term gut health lacks clear medical consensus resulting in a vague and malleable concept that has spread across the internet, and understandably so. Gastrointestinal symptoms are exceeding common, and often there is no clear identifiable cause. These conditions, classified medically as functional gastrointestinal disorders (IBS, dyspepsia…) affect up to 40% of people at any given time. As a doctor I always found hope in a diagnosis, as it allows us to discuss treatment options and their impact on the disease trajectory. Most importantly it provides an opportunity for education and clarification. Unfortunately, when these conditions are diagnosed they are not always communicated effectively, little to no education is offered, and time is not given for questions. This is a shame, because spending a few minutes to answer questions or ensuring a diagnosis or treatment is understood could help prevent additional suffering and the stigma that accompanies some of these medical conditions.

I love what I do, because it allows me the time and space to sit with people, get to know them, and answer their questions. As a result I provide practical and effective treatments for functional gastrointestinal disorders like IBS, constipation, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. These treatments are focused on improving five key areas that support gut health.

The five areas comprising the promotion of gut health are:

  1. Effective digestion and absorption of food

  2. Absence of GI Illness

  3. Normal and stable microbiota

  4. Effective GI barrier

  5. Well being

Gut health does not have to be vague, and its pursuit should not have to be extreme.
